Five hundred and sixty seven dollars of fun, as scouts and cubs teamed together to pack bags like they have never packed before and raise funds to support the 2nd Abbotsford ‘Port Neptune’ Sea Scouts.

The ladies at the checkout even managed to smile as dairy was packed with tins, vegetables with kitty litter and  detergent with frozen food.

But all was sorted out in the end plus we came up with a new idea for a badge. The “how to get a stupid polythene bag open” badge!

Thanks to Coles for letting us work there, and for the snacks!

There is still more time to raise some much needed funs, but we are well on our way.

It was an early morning for many of us but the bleary eyes didn’t dull the sparkle of our group on a mission.

Smiling faces and courteous requests encouraged passers by to donate more than ever before, with 2nd Abbotsford Cubs and Joeys achieving a record collection for Legacy; the Australian charity providing for defense force families suffering financially and socially after the death of a spouse or parent.

With an early breakfast provided at Legacy house, along with other volunteers, all were well prepared for a day of grueling smiling and accepting money.

Initial concerns over a lack of loose change soon passed as Cubs and Joeys agreed to accept $10, $20 and $50 notes.
The only remaining worry was if there would be any rosemary left for the Sunday roast.

The power of a warm smile and a polite demeanor were obvious as all who passed by our busy group left with a laugh and a smile…. and some Rosemary!

Rosemary for Remembrance.. and it can improve your memory!

 Five Dock RSL is a long time supporter of 2nd Abbotsford Sea Scouts, and we are pleased for the opportunity to repay them in some small way while honoring our local ANZAC servicemen & women in the Five Dock RSL ANZAC march.

Pipers followed by 2nd Abbotsford, lead the march Sydney police band and guest speakers added a degree of solemnity to the occasion as the gathered crowd reflect on the sacrifice of those who came before us.	A little after 10:am, the Blacktown Pipe Band lead the march from the RSL to the Memorial.
	With the local boy’s in blue helping keep the Sydney traffic at a safe distance, the march proceeded in a stately manner , growing in size as locals and onlookers joined and followed to the memorial.
Young and old joined in a service of remembrance and a celebration of gratitude for those who fought for our Country and way of life.
The Cubs and Joeys performed well keeping focus and composure during the long service under a hot sun.Standing tall with pride as they approached the memorial, their height proved a challenge for the gathered press,and the easily won the award for the shortest people to lay a wreath. Chief Scout Bear Grylls with Scouts

On 18th May 2009, The Scout Association announced Bear Grylls’ appointment as the tenth and youngest Chief Scout of the United Kingdom and Overseas Territories. Bear is one of the UK’s great outdoor adventurers; he is also a strong supporter of young people as seen via his work with international children’s charity, Global Angels. As Chief Scout, a position he will hold for five years, Bear will be the volunteer Leader of the largest co-educational youth Movement in the country: Scouting has around half a million Members including some 90,000 adult Leaders. – Announcement on World Scouts website

Here in Australia you can see Bear Grylls on TV – Monday nights on SBS his survival show ‘Man vs Wild’ is shown at 8:35pm. Online you can follow his exploits on Twitter, his blog or at http://www.beargrylls.com/. What an amazing example Bear is setting for people young and old everywhere!

Weary scouts line up for a photo

Our Scout group has begun their preparations already with a solid night of packing all the gear last Sunday. The Scouts set off to camp on Friday night and will return on Monday.

As usual, the Cub pack and Joey mob are invited to visit Region camp on the Sunday to visit and join in many of the activities that are available. This is a valuable opportunity for the younger sections to see the Scouts in action.

Reminder to Cub & Joey parents : drive to and park at Waterfall station to meet the free shuttle bus that will ferry us all down into Camp Coutts at 8:30am. Wear full uniform with comfortable shoes, bring lunch, snacks, water (important!), drinks, jumper, raincoat, a change of clothes and sunscreen. Sausage sandwiches will be on sale at camp.

Where is Camp Coutts? From Sydney drive down the Princes Highway to Waterfall station – easy!
